Two people shot dead by police in Mbeere North

On Tuesday, April 14, 2026, two people were shot and killed in Mbeere North, Embu County, during a demonstration over the deteriorating state of Ishiara Level 4 Hospital.

 Residents, primarily youth, protested against the poor condition of the Ishiara Level 4 Hospital, citing issues such as dilapidated buildingsblocked toilets, and a lack of ambulances. The demonstration turned fatal when police reportedly used live bullets to disperse the crowd after they attempted to storm the hospital and blocked the Embu Highway.Two young men were shot dead on the spot. In response, angry residents carried the bodies and dumped them at the Ishiara Police Station in protest.

Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire confirmed the deaths and promised immediate interventions at the hospital. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has been called upon to investigate the incident
