Mojtaba Khamenei was officially announced as Iran's third Supreme Leader on 8 March 2026. He succeeds his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was assassinated on 28 February 2026 during a series of airstrikes by the United States and Israel.

Before his election, Mojtaba served as a powerful behind-the-scenes "gatekeeper" in the Office of the Supreme Leader, managing intelligence, security, and economic affairs. He joined the IRGC at age 17 and served on the front lines during the Iran–Iraq War. He has been accused of orchestrating the crackdown on Green Movement protesters in 2009 and was sanctioned by the US Treasury in 2019. Analysts suggest he may favor a more aggressive pursuit of nuclear weapons to deter further foreign attacks, potentially reversing his father's previous fatwa against them.
